Highlights of December's Church Council MeetingPastor Galen will be on medical leave through the month of January due to open heart surgery. The Penn Central Conference office will supply pastors for the worship services January 8, 15, 22, and 29. Pastors in the Harrisburg Association will rotate through an on call schedule for the other days of January. Please see page 5 for schedule.Operations reported that the roof is in need of replacement and is in the process of obtaining bids.The budget for 2012 was presented and approved. In late September 2000, Rev. Dr. Galen E. Russell III was called to Chapel Hill UCC as its new pastor. The son and grandson of pastors, Pastor Galen came to Chapel Hill with sixteen years of ordained ministry experience behind him and several additional years of working with youth and young adults prior to his ordination. He brought with him the gift of music and has composed and recorded several songs for worship and other celebrations on two compact discs. Pastor Galen, and the Praise! Worship team, are frequently called to perform at other venues where they bring a more contemporary and enthusiastic form of worship to the young and young-at-heart. Pastor Galen Surgery Updates12/21/11 - Pastor Galen is doing very well. Most of the tubes have been removed. He is aware and talking. He has been able to get up and walk around. He is currently waiting to be moved to the "Step Down" unit for further recovery. Very Good News!12/24/11 - Pastor Galen was released from the hospital a day sooner than expected. He was able to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas day with his family. 01/04/12 - Dear Members and Friends of Chapel Hill United Church of Christ,It was two weeks and a day ago that I had my open heart surgery. I went into surgery feeling very supported by your prayers and good wishes! Now, I am happy to say, I am doing very well. My progress continues to be off the charts. I am doing everything normally, except I get tired much more easily. With good rest, appropriate exercise, and not too much over-doing anything, I think I will be back to normal in no time flat! My deep gratitude goes to God whose healing power is at work in me even now, to my wife, Barb, whose constant love has bolstered me every step of the way, and to all my beloved family and friends in and around my life, at church, and at home. Thank you to each one; thank you to all! Happy New Year!

“A New Heart, A New Spirit”“A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you;” (Ezekiel 36: 26)By the time you read this, I will be well on my way to a full recovery from my heart surgery! But, as I write this, I am less than 24 hours prior to surgery.It’s a strange feeling… writing at a time before surgery, but thinking about you as you’re reading this… after surgery.I’m thinking ahead… presuming that I literally have had my heart worked on and the problem corrected, I can say, “I have a new and improved heart within me!”You must know that I have felt God’s holy presence on countless occasions as I prepared for my surgery. Most of those occasions were when you… hundreds of you… told me that I was in your thoughts and prayers. God sustained me through your prayers; the Holy Spirit surrounds me even now as I write… and now when you read this.I believe that the truth of Ezekiel’s words comes true as he quotes God: through your prayers and God’s desire to answer all prayers, God put a new heart and a new spirit within me. A new and improved heart physically, and a new spirit that ignites my love for God and for you all the more. That spirit is fanned and bursts into a new flame of energy that God can use.Now don’t worry… I know what you’re thinking… that I will fan that spirit too quickly. Well, don’t fuss… I promise you I will let go and let God guide me… I will go at it slowly, with discernment, with pain and struggle, especially in the next few weeks. But, looking ahead, I see me gaining strength and energy, purpose and call, faith and patience.I pray that while I am gaining in these ways, you also will be gaining in these ways. With our excellent lay peoples’ guidance and leadership, you will gain in strength and energy, purpose and call, faith and patience. You can go at ministry slowly, with discernment and care, with some pain and struggle. But what emerges is a new heart and spirit within us, grounded in our God who gives us what we need to do the ministry of Jesus Christ. We will have a good new year!

Norma Swain Director of Music / Organist
Norma Swain holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Radford University and West VA University, with additional credits from several other colleges, including Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. She is a published author of two music books and numerous articles in international music journals. Norma teaches private piano lessons in Camp Hill, and serves as Organist/Director of the Historic Peace Church Chorale and as Executive Director of the Wednesday Club for the Performing Arts. She is also a collaborative concert artist.

Outreach News OCWM Our Church's Wider MissionOCWM has been designated as the Outreach focus for January in order to educate and refresh our knowledge of this vital UCC offering. Below are frequently asked questions about OCWM.What is it? Our Churches Wider Mission (OCWM) funds our local conference Penn Central Conference - and the national ministries of the UCC. OCWM includes Basic Support, for the funding of core programs and Special Support for the specific mission opportunities through the four UCC special mission offerings. (One Great Hour of Sharing, Strengthen the Church, Neighbors in Need and The Christmas Fund)How much of my offering every Sunday goes to OCWM? OCWM is not a budgeted item at Chapel Hill. This means that your weekly offering (your pledged amount) goes to the general fund for support of the ministry and maintenance of Chapel Hill. Only funds designated for OCWM are sent on to Penn Central Conference for that purpose. The Outreach Commission asks that you consider support of OCWM. You can support OCWM this month and throughout the year by designating your contribution on the OCWM line of your offering envelope or by using Pew Envelope.How much money given to OCWM is spent on administration? In the national ministries of the UCC, 7.4% ($688,200) of the total OCWM contributions for 2008 were budgeted for administration, which includes the costs of the overall organization of the national ministries and those parts of salaries, benefits, financial operations, rent, office costs, insurance, and professional fees that apply to administration.How is giving to OCWM different from giving to other good causes? OCWM keeps the church strong, even as it engages in mission and outreach to others. The church has a unique and important role to play in our society and the world. You can help sustain the church and its ministries by supporting Our Churches Wider Mission and the Special Support offerings throughout the year. Chapel Hill has been designated a 5 for 5 church, meaning we contribute to OCWM Basic Support and the Special Support offerings listed above.

UCC Homes Auxiliary

For many years, the people of our sponsoring congregations have brightened the lives of residents by remembering them with gifts of love at Christmas. Once again we are inviting you to share with those less fortunate.

A list of suggested gift items for the residents of Thornwald will be on the bulletin board in the Narthex. You may use these suggestions, or your own ideas, to purchase as many gifts for the residents. Please remember the gifts are to be new.

If you would like to make a donation of money, gifts will be purchased for the residents. Please make your check payable to UCC Homes. You may indicate (1) that your check is intended as a Christmas gift for a resident, and (2) the UCC Home facility where the gift is to go.

Suggestion: you may purchase gift cards through Chapel Hill for Giant, WalMart, etc. (please see Other on Gift Suggestion List.) If you would like to give a gift to a member of Chapel Hill, please specify the name of the resident.

Please note: the last Sunday for your donations will be December 4th so they can be delivered by the regulated deadlines. Look for a red bucket in the Narthex to place you items after November 1st.

First Quarter “Quarters”

The Outreach Commission is continuing the tradition of choosing a charitable organization or fund for support during each “quarter” of the year by the donation of quarters. All loose quarters placed in the weekly offering plate are forwarded, at the end of the quarter, to the specified organization. For the first quarter - January, February, March – of 2012, the quarters will be designated for the Caring Fund. This is a fund for assistance to Chapel Hill’s own members and friends of the congregation who are experiencing hard times. Disbursements from the Caring Fund are limited to no more than $100 per person, per request and are made by the Treasurer at the request of the Pastor. If you or someone you know could benefit from this assistance, please speak to Barbara Witmer.
